A Missed Connection:
You stopped to put your books into your bag, and I couldn’t help but notice that you’d just picked up Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. I told you I own the book but hadn’t read it yet because it was a bit daunting. You’re taking an economics class this quarter at the UW that will analyze the book. I wish I could read it with you, inch by inch, and then discuss it over coffee.
When you left, you gave me a great smile. A friend of mine asked me who you were after you’d gone — she’d seen the chemistry between us and figured we knew each other. I said I didn’t know you but that I thought you had been flirting with me. She agreed: “I think he was flirting with you too.” I was flirting with you too.
I’m *definitely* *not* the guy whom you were hoping to find — but I enjoyed the hope and longing you expressed.
Thanks for that, and Happy New Year.
